Like many of those who’s inspiration have helped to forge her career, singer/songwriter Kate Gaffney finds her roots in music that was made years before she was born. “The Coachman” (DIG 135), features her blending soulful song writing and resonant baritone with players she admires from both the Americana and Jam band scene. Kate discovered her muse early in the new century where a long-established music scene was getting a reboot thanks to national attention being heaped on local Sacramento prodigy, Jackie Greene. In 2007 , inspired and armed with a batch of new songs, Gaffney went into the studio in Philadelphia, then on to LA
to finish recording her third CD, “The Coachman”. The album, produced by Barrie Maguire (Amos Lee, Natalie Merchant) is supported by a sterling cast of musicians including Steve Kimmock, pedal steel ace, Greg Leisz and the multi-instrumentalist Jackie
Greene. The album starts with a brief acoustic confession “My Word”, then roars into action with the furious Susan Tedeschi/Bonnie Raitt inspired “What Kind Of Man.” Gaffney’s honesty, sugared by wit and her ability to throw a surprising twist into a song is most evident in “Give It A Whirl” where she builds the story of a man her friend is in love with who she nearly runs into...literally.
“The Coachman” is full of great songs, but two deserve special mention: “The Ballad Of Sleepy John” written by Jackie Greene about their days developing their chops at a former strip club where both cut their teeth as performers and “The Coachman”
where, true to her jam band influences, Kate encourages the band to let it all out for an extended melancholy journey to close the album. Armed with one of the regions top-notch bands and smitten by the music, Gaffney will hit the road in heavy support of “The Coachman” sharing the energy, inspiration and magnificent voice of one hard-to-beat-high flying Americana songstress.
