The story of Moby Grape would make a terrific movie with many tragic and unhappy plot twists and a kind of unresolved ending. The band was one of the best from the late 60s San Francisco Sound. Musically, they played circles around just about everybody you can think of. Here were five singer/songwriters with a 3-guitar attack, harmonies that rivaled the Beatles, and the good sense to keep their songs to a few minutes in length. The Columbia debut Moby Grape was, and is, regarded as the perfect debut. But, the excesses of the time, personal meltdowns, and botched handling by management and record label alike conspired to kill the career of Moby Grape.

Over the years, plenty of wonderful recordings came out mixed with some that weren't so great. The band broke up and reformed in many configurations. But, in 1989 four or the five got together, rehearsed, performed, and finally recorded with the same verve that got them going in thte mid 60's. The resulting "Legendary grape by "The Melvilles" on Herman Records was sold on cassette only to about 600 fans lucky enough to find it. Many think of this album as the logical successor to the first record.
DIG Music has greatly enhanced the collection and presents it for the first time on CD.
Jerry Miller continues to play regularly in the Seattle/Tacoma area, and has been known to appear in Northern California with Bob Mosley. Peter Lewis has been performing in the Central California Coast area. Don Stevenson has become successful in real estate in Whistler, Canada. Skip Spence died in 2000.

Legendary Grape
(DIG 108)

Seminal Summer of Love band still has the chops. DIG Music refreshes and release a nearly-impossible-to-find album.

Original members of Moby Grape, Jerry Miller, Don Stevenson, Bob Mosley, and Peter Lewis entered the studio in 1989 armed with a Skip Spence song, plus 10, more and made what many consider the successor to their 1967 debut album. Now, DIG has restored the lost 11th tune from the original cassette-only release and added 7 more bonus tracks from the same era.
This is Moby Grape as you remember them! Liner notes by Rolling Stone Editor David Fricke.
